From the Drawing Board: The Evolution of the Motorcycle Decal

Motorcycle decals have been a constant fad among the people of the biker circles. It seems to be either a sign of membership to a certain group or even a close circle of bikers. With designs ranging from the skulls and bones, to the tame ones of the cartoon kind, it seemed like a motorcycle owner’s bike isn’t complete if the bike does not have a decal.

During the rise of the famed sticker, motorcycle decals are merely stickers that needed to be soaked in water in order for the actual design to stick. A biker needed precise timing and lots of luck in order for the whole design to stick during the process; but a lot of times, the biker is not as lucky as he or she actually is. During those times as well, designs for these motorcycle stickers are just simple designs since there are no available means in order for the designer to project high resolution designs. It was only in later times that there is a breakthrough in motorcycle sticker design making it possible for auto shops to also produce detailed designs. Using computers and printers, auto shops and detailers have made it possible to choose even high resolution designs to be printed and posted to a motorcycle without the hassles. Also, these technologies made it also possible for the motorcycle decals to be easily placed on the body of the vehicle, without the aid of water.

The evolution of the motorcycle decal from messy motorcycle sticker into a fashionable icon also made its mark among bikers and advertisers. Bikers would use these stickers to identify themselves on the racetrack by projecting their names on vinyl as decals. Also, advertisers made use of these motorcycle stickers as well in order for them to promote their goods and services. Several bikers can now be seen sporting decals from famous establishments such as McDonald’s, Taco Bell or even Foot Locker.

A lot of things have changed ever since bikers have found the way to revolutionize decal designing. The messy and frustrating days of placing a simple motorcycle decal to your unit has long been gone. The manual and hand-made designs of simple shapes are long over. Nowadays, putting a motorcycle sticker on is as easy as pie. Not only that, you also get to see to it that the design you wanted would be followed to the last detail. Any size, any shape, and any color. You can even opt to make your own design that you wanted to project on your neat ride. All you need to have is a little artistic touch, some vinyl, and a computer unit equipped with the right software and printer, and instantly, you can have your own little business of decal designing; unlike before, when you need to manually design every order, and even set a limit on the detail that a customer wants.

The evolution of designing decals has come a long way. What the future holds for this little art remains to be seen. But what is certain, is that this is very far from over.
